On Monday I was lucky enough to visit the Deal area of Kent again, to watch one of my up and coming young players in the Tillman Trophy. Having spent many a happy time down in this area of kent, it was great to once again take in the sights and experience these terrific courses, if only from a spectators point of view.
There are a trio of clubs within the Sandwich/Deal area that make the ideal base for a golfing break and trust me when I say theses courses are a real challenge! You have Princes Golf Club, Royal St.Georges and Royal Cinque Ports, all withinn a couple of miles of one another.
Princes Golf Club - a combo of three great 9 hole course, all different and all very much a superb challenge. Great friendly club, who provide a warm welcome and a great lunch, well worth a visit.
Royal St.Georges - Not easy to get on and might cost you a few extra bucks than the other two, but well worth it as a special treat! Only downside is no 3 or 4 balls, a tad old school in their approach, but as an Open course I guess they can call the shots. Great challenge to play, not for the faint hearted off the backs, but you feel like you have half a chance off the middle tees and when the wind's not blowing it's a piece of cake, well almost!
Royal Cinque Ports - Normally playing one into the wind, then 8 or so down wind and then turn into the teeth of it all the way back to the club house, trying to hold onto what score you built on the front 9!! Some truly great holes and challenging shots, be brave on some tee shots and you can really maximise the hard running fairways and scores can be posted pretty low! As with Princes, a warm welcome to what is a great links adventure.
With regard staying in this are, I would recommend the Bell Hotel in Sandwich, a convenient location and a warm and friendly hotel, based right in the centre of the great little village of Sandwich. With a nice choice of pubs and a couple of restuarants to choose from, you will find this the ideal base for your links golfing experience.
Enjoy yourselves!
