September 2009 - Top marks for MJGA Juniors
Congratulations to Elliot Fenton who achieved 92% for his GCSE short course in P.E., which is an A*, with 95% for his golf practical assessment. Elliot who only took up the game recently, has progressed very well in golf and school lessons despite missing a number of weeks with illness. His PE teacher commented, "Elliot has worked very hard this year. He has overcome everything that has been thrown at him and has even gone out of his way to learn a new sport. I cannot commend Elliot further for his outstanding development over the last year." Karen (Elliots mum, who has since participated in our Play Sport lessons) had this to say; "Golf has been such a morale booster for Elliot. Whenever he has been unwell or felt weak, the minute there has been any improvement I've taken him out for some gentle putting practise and it totally lifts his spirits." "Things are good at the moment and Elliot still LOVES his golf. He usually plays once in the week and twice at weekends if we can squeeze it in and his handicap has improved greatly - he recently shot 39 at Chessington, his best 9 holes there." "Oli has always been so supportive of Elliot and interested in helping him, I can't thank him enough. Plus it's wonderful for young teens to find good male role models and mentors and he is definitely this to Elliot. Thank you so much for all the time and effort you have put into Elliot and his golf. And thanks to all the other staff at Chessington - everyone has always been very friendly and helpful." Elliot is now part of our 14 - 18s group and continues to improve.
May 2009 - Academy Watch
In this article we are focusing on two of our younger Superstar Academy Players, Harry Wort and Gemma Heath. You may have already noticed that despite there being less than a year between them, they are physically quite different. This is one of the reasons why our junior coaching programmes are based on a long term athlete development (LTAD) model. This ensures that the needs of each individual are met according to their maturation stage and not chronological age. As well as being excellent golfers, they also play other sports. Harry is a keen cricketer and enjoys his football, while Gemma also plays a very high standard of tennis. It's no surprise that our talented young golfers also excel in other sports. They have been given the best possible start, to a lifelong participation in sport, due to the development of their fundamental movement skills. It's for this reason that we adopt a multi skills approach to our coaching when working with young juniors. Harry also takes part in out Tri Golf lessons at his school.
